Dear God Make Me Like the Hagfish: Answered Prayers

This book was born from a bold and unusual prayer: “Dear God, make me like the hagfish.” The hagfish is a small, unassuming creature that lives in the depths of the sea, yet when threatened, it protects itself in extraordinary ways. When attacked, it instantly expels a thick, milky slime that expands in water and clogs the gills of predators like sharks, choking them to the point of retreat. Its loose, flexible skin allows it to twist and slip away, making it almost impossible to capture. The hagfish bothers no one, minds its own business, yet cannot be destroyed by those who seek to devour it. I prayed for God to make me like the hagfish because of the recurrent mistreatment I faced as a Black woman in corporate and federal environments—through systemic racism, sexism, silencing, and sidelining. Like many women at the summit I attended, I knew what it felt like to be under attack for simply existing in spaces not built for us. My prayer was rooted in scripture. Just as in Daniel 9:22–23 and 10:12, where Daniel’s anguished prayers were heard immediately and answered by God’s angels, I trusted God with my rawest, most primal fears and desires (Psalm 37:4). I journaled them faithfully from 2014 onward, and what filled those volumes were answered prayers—so unbelievable I wouldn’t have believed them myself had I not written them down. Hagfish is the story of that trust. It’s about baring all of myself—the good, the bad, and the ugly—before God, trusting He would love me, teach me His ways (Exodus 33:13), and continue to show me favor. And in return, He gave me resilience, protection, and victory. Like the hagfish, I learned to emit what disarms the enemy and rise above predators that once sought to silence me.
