THE ELDERLY GENTLEMAN'S ULYSSEE

BY Hans Bodmer • POSTED ON July 1, 2024

A memoir documenting an aging Swiss man’s hike from Zurich to Geneva.

The author recounts his 12-day cross-country hike in his native Switzerland. The paths were (mostly) well marked, and Bodmer, a middle-aged but active man, easily managed the terrain. After beginning in Zurich, he planned to end his sojourn at the Café de la Place in Meyrin, Geneva, where he would enjoy a celebratory beer. The stakes were low, and his only goal was to reach his destination as quickly as possible. He stayed in whatever hotel accommodations he could find, including one night in an ex-girlfriend’s caravan, and faced various obstacles and delights—rainy weather, the occasional treacherous mountain path, and encounters with locals and fellow travelers—some charming and some odd. More often, he was left alone with his thoughts, and he pondered everything from Swiss technology to football matches. This book is a shortened version of the original, which Bodmer published in German in 2022. He translated the previous work into English himself, the frequently stilted prose suggests much was lost in the translation. The narration notes in careful detail the hotels stayed in and the meals consumed, but unfortunately, it skips over more interesting subjects, like chance conversations with strangers met while walking. Those interested in traveling to Switzerland will find the premise intriguing, but the descriptions of the landscape are underwhelming: “He reaches Lake Biel. Its beautiful blue and gentle waves are calming. The hiking trail around the lake is ideal.” The story is told in third person, which has an alienating effect on what could have been a very personal story. The depictions of Bodmer interacting with women (peeking at them in the showers, referring to unattractive women as “witch” or “dragon”) is off-putting. Overall, the work feels like a series of journal entries rather than a honed memoir.

Contains flashes of rich material but reads like an unfinished document.

AANEX to THE ELDERLY GENTLEMAN’S ULYSSEE

This book is an attempt to illustrate the title THE ELDERLY GENTLEMAN’S ULYSSEE. It contains 136 illustrations. Additional text has been added to explain the relevant events of the hiker, especially for non-Swiss readers. The illustrations have been closely linked, and relevant parts of the text have been taken from the original text. This copied text is written in italics to distinguish it from the normal text of this book. The author first tried to integrate the illustrations presented here into the hardcover version. But this proved difficult. And the images became too narrow to convey anything to the reader.

CDC: The happy years with a spectacular IT 'Phenomena'

The histories of the developments, success, and groundings of IT companies could fill books of several hundred pages. This book here concentrates on the relatively short, but exotic life cycle of the Control Data Corporation. For a long time, this in Minneapolis, Minnesota founded and later became a worldwide leader, was only known to specialists. For normal people, their computers were just one of those IBM machines. CDC and IBM were bitter enemies. IBM survived. In this essay entitled CDC are historical proven, and also not so proven rumors intermixed with humorous human anecdotes which always are related to CDC. It tries to explain to the non-computer freaks the hectic time that led to the completely IT-oriented world in there we live today

The OTHER Computer History.

An older man writes about his experiences from the early days of computer science until 2004. At that time, it was not recognized for a long time what a gigantic transformation it would bring to human history. Successes of IT and thereby also the usual 'flops' as well as its own will be described as subjectively as possible. It is attempted by non-technical examples and 'parables' and precise translation of the computer-specific terms to make the whole 'thing' for laymen in this area more 'digestible'. The inevitable upcoming associations resulted in writing down human anecdotes, amusing episodes, and descriptions of picturesque situations. But he soon returns to reality and his own 'theses' and 'philosophic' illusions. With a laugh, tears, and a blinking eye, he now says to his 'buddies': Goodbye. We had an excellent time.
