Tween Abby is rocked by a host of sudden changes but gradually finds her footing.

Abby’s cousin and best friend, Zoe, is moving away, and Abby’s seemingly the only kid without a cell phone to stay in touch. Her woes are just beginning. In short order, she clashes with her health-conscious mother, who believes phones should be off limits until eighth grade; unhappily realizes that she’s developing breast buds; learns that Mom has taken a demanding job because Dad has lost his; and must participate in a hated after-school activity: running club. Fourth grade is looking tough: Unsmiling Mr. Smiley gives the class a first-day quiz, precipitating Abby’s horrified realization that her sweat now smells. More trials are spaced throughout the story, but Abby proves resilient. After encountering an unhoused neighbor and learning about tiny houses, Abby works for local change. Her letters to Zoe form part of the text, adeptly capturing her voice. Though Zoe fails to respond, Abby finds new friends, and at school she discovers that maps are cool and that both supporting others and being supported can be empowering. Though put-upon, Abby is just sassy enough to clear the wimp barrier and just reasonable enough not to be obnoxious. Bryant gives her authentic emotions, realistic challenges, and small yet meaningful triumphs. Physical descriptors are minimal.

An eventful, well-paced series starter that will find eager readers.
